Challenges

Amazon lockers are usually set up and tested by technicians using its built-in touch screen computer. It's a long, complex process that can take days or even weeks with delays.

However, an updated variant of the locker was in the works that would greatly simplify its construction by removing the screen and replacing the connection with low-energy bluetooth.

This meant that our technicians would need a way to connect to these new lockers with their phones in order to perform first-time setup and testing. I was tasked with designing this experience.

Solution

I designed a mobile app experience that guides the technician through a streamlined setup and testing process. The user just needs to be within bluetooth range of the locker and enter a unique setup code and it will connect automatically.

Setup begins with one tap, and most of the testing is internal and automatic. The only physical tests needed are making sure the doors open properly and there are no visible defects on the unit. Any issues or defects can be addressed immediately by the trained technician.

This is a big diagram showing my proposed service flow for the locker.

Outcomes

This streamlined setup process would be able to reduce the time for a new locker to get online from days down hours—or less. Delivering these designs kept the program on track toward their planned beta launch of the new locker variant in Europe and the US.
